I've seen projects where the technology performed exactly as intended, yet six months later very few people were actively using it. I've also seen relatively straightforward implementations become integral to daily operations because teams quickly recognised the value they were receiving. In both cases, the technology was only part of the story.
The difference was what happened during the first 90 days.
Those first few months shape behaviours, establish confidence and determine whether a new system becomes embedded into the operation or quietly slips into the background while people return to familiar habits.
Adoption isn’t built during training, but through daily use
Training sessions are important because they introduce people to a new way of working, but they rarely determine long-term success.
People don't build confidence by sitting in a meeting room watching demonstrations. They build confidence by solving real production challenges with the system in front of them. The first time an operator identifies a recurring issue more quickly, the first time a supervisor resolves a problem without relying on manual reports, or the first time an engineer uncovers the root cause of a recurring fault in minutes instead of hours, the technology begins proving its value.
Those moments matter because they replace uncertainty with trust.
The more frequently people experience practical benefits during those first 90 days, the more naturally the system becomes part of their everyday decision-making.

One of the mistakes organisations sometimes make is trying to transform everything at once.

Leadership shapes adoption more than technology

People watch what leaders do far more closely than what they say.
If production meetings continue relying on spreadsheets instead of the new platform, teams quickly conclude that nothing has really changed. If supervisors continue asking for manual updates rather than using live operational information, old habits inevitably return.
The opposite is also true.
When leaders consistently use the system to guide discussions, ask questions and make decisions, adoption accelerates because the technology becomes part of the operational culture rather than simply another tool.
Software becomes valuable when people see it influencing the way the business operates, not just the way information is displayed.

Looking back across dozens of manufacturing implementations, the projects that delivered the greatest long-term value all shared one characteristic.
They focused just as much on changing behaviours as they did on deploying technology.
The first 90 days were used to build confidence, encourage curiosity and demonstrate practical value every single week. People weren't expected to trust the system because they had been told to. They trusted it because it consistently helped them make better decisions.
That's ultimately what determines whether software becomes indispensable or forgotten.
Not the quality of the implementation.
But whether, three months later, the people using it every day would choose to work without it.
