Spend enough time working with manufacturing teams and one thing quickly becomes clear. Two factories can introduce almost identical technology, supported by similar training, timelines and implementation plans, yet the response from their people can be completely different.

One lesson has remained remarkably consistent across every implementation I've been involved in.

Manufacturing teams quickly embrace technology that removes friction.

They become sceptical of technology that creates it.

If operators are expected to complete additional manual tasks without seeing any immediate benefit, enthusiasm disappears quickly. If supervisors need to navigate multiple screens simply to answer straightforward operational questions, they'll often return to the methods they already know.

Technology should simplify work, not complicate it.

The most successful deployments aren't remembered because they introduced impressive functionality. They're remembered because they removed frustrations that had existed for years.

Change happens through involvement, not instruction

One of the biggest predictors of successful adoption isn't the amount of training delivered or the sophistication of the technology.

It's whether people feel they were part of the journey.

The strongest implementations create opportunities for operators, supervisors and maintenance teams to contribute long before the system goes live. Their feedback influences how the solution is configured. Their operational experience shapes the conversations being had. Their understanding of the production process helps identify opportunities that technical specifications alone could never uncover.

That level of involvement changes the relationship with the technology.

Instead of feeling like something introduced to the factory, it becomes something built with the factory.

Successful change rarely arrives through one defining moment.

It develops gradually.

A recurring fault is identified sooner than before. A production meeting becomes shorter because everyone is working from the same information. Looking back across the most successful manufacturing projects, the common thread has never been the technology itself. It's been the people using it.

The factories that embrace change most successfully aren't necessarily more innovative or more technologically advanced. They simply create environments where people understand why change matters, experience its benefits early and trust that it's helping them do their jobs better.

When that happens, change stops feeling like disruption.

It simply becomes a better way of working.
